JLL’s New Downtown Office Partners with charity: water at Winter Garden

16 volunteers from JLL to help visitors to Winter Garden at Brookfield Place understand what life is like without access to clean water

NEW YORK, September 20, 2016 — Volunteers from JLL's Downtown office helped visitors to the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place understand what life is like without access to clean water. The 16 volunteers from JLL worked closely with charity: water on August 24th to educate people about drinking water in developing nations, while generating donations to bring clean water to 10,000 people.

The volunteers provided interactive glasses to viewers that contain a seven-minute video reality-style movie detailing an actual project from the viewpoint of a 13-year-old girl in an Ethiopian village. Each time a person watched the video, a $30 donation was unlocked from a pledge made by one of the organization's benefactors.

"We were thrilled at the opportunity to work with charity: water, teach people about drinking water access around the world and help raise funds," John Wheeler, managing director and head of JLL's Downtown office. "The organization brings safe and clean drinking water to people in some of the poorest regions around the globe. It's incredible what access to a safe source of water can do for a community that lacked such a basic need."

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, charity: water took over the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place, 200 Vesey Street in Lower Manhattan, from August 9th to August 28th with an interactive exhibition designed to show the public what life is like for the 663 million people across the globe who lack access to clean water.

The Winter Garden at Brookfield Place was filled with virtual reality screening pods where visitors could watch charity: water's VR film "The Source," which follows a 13-year-old Ethiopian girl as her village receives clean water for the first time. There were also weekend "water walks" where visitors were challenged to walk with 40-pound jerry cans of water, giving them a small taste of the hours-long walk that countless women and children around the world do every day to collect water.

The event was free to participate, and thanks to a generous donor, every viewing of the film or participation in the water walk unlocked a $30 donation to give one person clean water, with the goal of bringing clean water to 10,000 people in need.
