Travel Startup Upside Takes Full Floor at 1602 L Street, NW in Washington, D.C.

JLL’s Andy O’Brien Works With Priceline Founders on New Lease in CBD

WASHINGTON, D.C., JUNE 28, 2016 - JLL announced today that Upside, a new travel startup company launched by several members of the founding team from Priceline, has signed a new lease for 6,000 square feet at 1602 L Street, NW, the boutique, Class A office building in the heart of Washington, D.C.’s central business district.

JLL’s Andy O’Brien and Zach Boroson represented Upside in this lease transaction, which aims to serve the firm during its initial phase of growth.

“Upside’s lease is representative of the growing trend among new technology and creative start-ups to secure flexible space that allows for accelerated growth,” said O’Brien, who co-founded JLL’s HiRise platform, which streamlines the leasing process for the unique needs of startups and creative companies. “Upside’s plans for recruitment could triple its employee count over the next 24 months, but the company had an immediate space requirement making 1602 L Street a perfect fit.”

1602 L Street, a nine-story, 52,300-square-foot, Class-A building owned by JBG, is unique for its 6,000-square-foot floor plates, offering companies like Upside the benefit of a full-floor presence in Washington, D.C.’s central business district. The building offers tenants floor-to-ceiling glass windows along its north façade, on-site parking, conference facility and abundant neighborhood amenities.

Upside is the first mobile and web solution that allows business travellers to turn flexibility on flights and hotels into hundreds of dollars of free gift cards at stores of their choice while creating travel savings for their companies, on every trip. Priceline founder Jay Walker, founding Priceline CTO Scott Case and former President of Priceline Europe, Tim Brier, lead the company. “We’re excited to launch Upside in Washington, D.C. The startup community here is thriving, and the energy and opportunity to build amazing products is tangible,” said Scott Case, Upside’s President and Chief Operating Officer. “The flexibility of the space at 1602 L Street has already allowed us to reconfigure our office multiple times to accommodate our growing team.”

“It says a lot about Washington, D.C. that Upside’s executives chose to base their company here,” O’Brien added. “They really could have gone anywhere they wanted.”

O’Brien has a history of working with Case. O’Brien worked with Case and Donna Harris of 1776 to launch its Startup Regions around the nation, and Case served as an advisor and mentor when O’Brien was launching HiRise.
