Dedication of $38M Ground Up Academic Building at Trinity Washington University

JLL’s higher education specialists serve as project manager for the 80,000-SF project

WASHINGTON, DC. June 24, 2016 – JLL (NYSE: JLL) was pleased to celebrate the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Trinity Washington University's Payden Academic Center held on June 4, 2016. JLL and its team of dedicated higher education specialists served as the project manager for the $38 million, 80,000-square foot, LEED certified building that features state-of-the-art nursing and science labs, classrooms and gathering spaces where rising generations of Trinity students will flourish. The project was delivered on time and under budget. The Payden Academic Center is named in honor of the family of Joan A. Payden, a graduate of Trinity and the lead benefactor of the capital campaign that supported this construction project.

"The completion of Trinity's Payden Academic Center solidifies the University's reputation for academic quality and enables students to prepare for future careers in a state-of-the-art environment that will increase the school's competitiveness for many years," says Michelle Dandeneau, Managing Director at JLL who led the project management team. "This innovative building is both beautiful and functional and serves as a powerful symbol of Trinity's intellectual values and institutional ambition."

Founded in 1897 as one of the nation's first Catholic women's colleges, Trinity today enrolls more than 2,200 students in diversified programs that maintain the historic daytime women's undergraduate college while also providing coeducational undergraduate and graduate professional programs in education, nursing, business and other professional fields. Trinity is a leader in educating first-generation urban learners: it educates more DC residents than any other private college or university in the nation and more than half of its students live in DC. A majority of the students are the first in their families to attend college and 90 percent are African-American or Hispanic. The median family income of full-time freshmen is $25,000 and about 85 percent of Trinity's students receive Pell grants.

In recent years, Trinity has seen significant growth it is student population and has added majors in nursing and health professions. The Payden Academic Center will harness advances in academic technology, science research and instruction to accommodate these programs and provide a higher level of instructional support to all of its students. The building includes twelve fully-equipped science and nursing laboratories, 23 classrooms and seminar spaces, study lounges, faculty offices and a spacious lobby. This is the first new academic building on Trinity's campus since its library opened in 1963 and its construction was made possible through generous donations by alumnae and community benefactors.

To shepherd this ambitious project through to completion, Trinity retained JLL for project management with EYP Architecture & Engineering and Clark Construction Group, LLC as the design build team. JLL's oversight has ensured the building's delivery on schedule and well below budget. Now that the new Payden Academic Center has achieved substantial completion, faculty and equipment are being moved over the summer in preparation for the start of classes in August 2016. The building is a fulfillment of Trinity's strategic long-range goals for academic excellence, creativity and greater capacity.
