Floating Wetlands and Rain Gardens Created to Celebrate National Volunteer Week

30 JLL volunteers spend day of service with Baltimore Community Toolbank

BALTIMORE, April 21, 2015 – JLL’s Baltimore office celebrated National Volunteer Week with a day of service at the Baltimore Community Toolbank. Coordinated in partnership with Business Volunteers Maryland, 30 JLL employees spent the afternoon on-site at the Toolbank constructing floating wetlands, maintaining rain gardens and cleaning up the surrounding Southwest Baltimore industrial neighborhood.

The Baltimore Community Toolbank works to empower other nonprofits by providing them with the tools and resources they need to execute their missions and amplify their impact. Though based in southwest Baltimore, their reach is felt far beyond this neighborhood at the volunteer events, special events and day-to-day programming of nonprofits and community groups throughout the region.

“JLL is proud to be part of the Baltimore community and these projects were all undertaken with an aim to improve the health and vitality of Baltimore’s neighborhoods and waterways,” said Mark Levy, Managing Director and Baltimore Market Leader, JLL.

The floating wetlands will be deployed in the Inner Harbor over the course of the next few weeks as part of the Waterfront Partnership’s Healthy Harbor Initiative, helping to restore the Harbor’s natural filtration systems, while the Toolbank’s rain gardens help filter over 300,000 gallons of rainwater runoff a year.
The day’s hard work was capped off with a BBQ picnic courtesy of Mission BBQ and an opportunity to further engage with Toolbank staff, board members and fellow volunteers.
