JLL Construction Completes Facade Restoration on Historic Gym at Tufts in Medford

BOSTON, January 5, 2015 – JLL Construction has completed construction of the Cousens Gymnasium facade restoration project at Tufts University in Medford, MA.

The project addressed all envelope-related deferred maintenance issues, and required a significant amount of historical custom brick replication. The scope of the restoration included: lintel replacement, repointing of façade and chimney, selective repair and replacement of brick and cast stone elements, selective foundation repairs, waterproofing of all facade elements and exposed foundation, window replacement and refurbishment, replacement of all lead-coated copper copings, replacement of all copper downspouts and scuppers, selective pitched roof repair and flat roof replacements, and the refurbishment/reconstruction of the main entry stairs.

Interior work relating to exterior maintenance issues was also completed. Large energy recovery ventilator units were added to ventilate the space. Conditioning was added to the front offices. Cracking on the inside faces of the exterior walls and foundation were repaired and the walls repainted.

Cousens Gymnasium, which opened in 1932, was named for Tufts’ sixth president John Albert Cousens, an advocate for sports and fitness. For years one of the region’s outstanding athletics facilities, Cousens Gym hosted musical legends such as Simon and Garfunkle and The Band, and was the site for the high school prom scene in the 1994 film The Next Karate Kid. The historic gym still retains its distinctive character.

“This was a high profile restoration program for Tufts on one of their most significant buildings on campus,” said JLL Project Manager Bob Kelly. “We were excited to be a part of the team, which includes Timothy D. Smith Architects out of Bennington, Vermont.”

Joining Bob on the JLL Construction team was Superintendent Steve Delisle and Estimator Drew Dana.
