Cloud-Based Start-Up Firm Kit Check Expands in the District

Kit Check grew rapidly in 2013, needed space to accommodate expansion

WASHINGTON, February 6, 2014 -- Jones Lang LaSalle announced today that Kit Check, Inc., a Washington, DC-based start-up company that provides cloud-based software to automate hospital pharmacy kit processing, has signed a lease for approximately 6,500 square feet at 803 7th Street, NW, in the District's Chinatown neighborhood.

Kit Check, which raised $10.4 million in 2013 and grew its base of hospital clients from 2 to 43, had outgrown the UberOffice co-working space it had occupied in Rosslyn since launching in late 2012.

Andrew D. O’Brien, Senior Vice President in the Washington, DC office of Jones Lang LaSalle, represented Kit Check in this transaction. Bobby Blair with CBRE represented the sub-landlord, Alliance for Automobile Manufacturers.

"We are proud to have once again represented one of Washington, D.C.'s emerging technology companies as it matures from co-working space into its own space in the District," said O'Brien, who has been a part of several deals like this over the past 18 months. "This space will allow Kit Check to continue to grow, recruit top-notch talent and service its existing and future client base."

Kit Check's new space features 12-foot exposed ceilings, a shower, a bike rack and exposed brick. Both a Starbucks and the Gallery Place-Chinatown metro stop are across the street from the building, which also has immediate area amenities including restaurants and nightlife.

“Andy found us a below-market, short-term deal in a brand new building where we could design the space exactly to our specifications, with amenities that will surely differentiate us in the recruiting battle for top talent,” said Kevin MacDonald, founder and CEO of Kit Check. “Andy was also able to negotiate renewal and expansion options that will accommodate our rapid growth over the next several years.”

803 7th St., NW, was redeveloped for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, an advocacy group for the automobile industry. Its lease with Kit Check allowed for a full build-out allowance, a renewal option and expansion space.

Kit Check ( tagged and tracked over 850,000 medications with RFID and its cloud-based software solution through December 2013, eliminating 10 million item checks that were previously done manually. This has saved Kit Check users over 25 man-years of unproductive labor, including 25,000 pharmacist hours that are now being applied to clinical care instead of administrative tasks.
