Retailers Targeted Expansion Plans Boost Need for GIS Professionals

Michael Startin joins Jones Lang LaSalle as Vice President of GIS

CHICAGO, May 16, 2013 — Neil Armstrong once said, “Research is creating new knowledge.”  But what is the point of knowledge, if it can’t be shared? In an effort to arm its retail clients with strategic data and insights, Jones Lang LaSalle is boosting its research capabilities with the hiring of Michael Startin, a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) specialist. In his new role as Vice President, Startin will work closely with the firm’s brokerage and Americas research groups to implement GIS technologies that integrate computer hardware, specialized mapping software and data to capture, manage, analyze and display geographic information. He will partner with Walter Wahlfeldt, Managing Director of the firm’s Retail Tenant Representation practice, to support clients with location advisory consulting, development and investment sales offerings. Startin will be based in the firm’s Chicago headquarters.

“As retailers continue to selectively expand their portfolios, it’s imperative that we leverage GIS tools to provide them real-time, forward looking and accurate data that drills down into their target markets,” said Wahlfeldt. “Michael has developed some of the top commercial real estate industry research products, and his expertise will further our ability to provide clients with specific trade area mapping, high resolution market aerials and in-depth demographic analysis.”

Startin comes to Jones Lang LaSalle from SRS Real Estate Partners, where most recently he was National Research Manager of Market Intelligence responsible for managing the 12-member GIS team. While with SRS, he was a four-time winner of the firm’s “Going the Extra Mile” award.  Additionally, Startin was recognized by the National Client Retailers for Research/GIS Performance.

He earned his Master of Science degree in Geosciences from Mississippi State University and his Bachelor of Science degree in Geography from Arizona State University. He is an active member of the ICSC, the International Geographic Honors Society and the Mississippi State/Arizona State Alumni Associations.
