With support from JLL construction project managers, University of Cincinnati student team places first in the Associated Schools of Construction Great Lakes competition.
CINCINNATI, Nov. 27 2012 — Jones Lang LaSalle and the University of Cincinnati’s student team finished first place overall in the 2012 Associated Schools of Construction competition in Chicago. The contest was an opportunity for 275 students from the Great Lakes region to meet construction industry professionals, attend presentations related to construction, and compete against one another in the featured construction planning competition. As a Co-operative Education partner of University of Cincinnati, Jones Lang LaSalle became involved in the conference through the partnership, serving as an active participant and sponsor.
Rounding out the top three in the October 17-20 competition were Bowling Green State University (second place) and Milwaukee School of Engineering (third place). Additional sponsors of the conference included Walsh Construction, Pepper Construction, Kiewit, McCarthy Building Company, Aldridge Electric, Turner Construction, Barton Malow, McShane Construction, and Bowen Engineering.
The competition pitted University-based teams of students against each other in different divisions related to construction such as commercial, heavy civil, preconstruction services, and design-build. General contractors in the area presented projects they had completed in the past and the students reviewed the drawings and specifications to develop an understanding of the project. Students were then given one day to draft a written proposal complete with a project management plan, cost estimate, value engineering strategies, project schedule, and LEED implementation plan.
After the completion of the project proposals, students presented their plans to the general contractors who were involved with the projects. Awards were presented to teams who best exemplified their knowledge of the project based on their written proposal and oral presentation.
Jones Lang LaSalle first formed a partnership with the University of Cincinnati in 2007 through its Co-operative Education hiring program. Since forming the partnership, Jones Lang LaSalle has won the University’s Co-op Employer of the Year award and has hired former co-op employee of the year Kyle Pagel as a full-time Associate Project Manager.
The University of Cincinnati competition team was led by Patrick Lyden, former co-op employee and current Jones Lang LaSalle Associate Project Manager. “The reason the University of Cincinnati is able to have such success at these types of events is because of the real life experience we gain through Co-op,” Lyden said. “Jones Lang LaSalle has taught me a lot about the construction industry, and I was able to apply those learnings to the competition.”
