Jones Lang LaSalle Primary Sponsor for United Way Real Estate Breakfast

Over 1,200 attend event honoring the late Hank Spaulding and Polly Bryson

BOSTON, MA, Nov. 2, 2012 — More than 1,200 Boston area real estate leaders attended the 19th Annual United Way Real Estate & Building Industry Leadership Breakfast at the Westin Waterfront Hotel on Thursday, celebrating the collective philanthropic commitment of the real estate & building industry to benefit one of United Way’s key focus areas – preventing family homelessness.  One of United Way of Massachusetts Bay & Merrimack Valley’s largest fundraisers, this sold out event has raised $31 million since 1994 and this year is just $50,000 short of its $3 million goal.  Jones Lang LaSalle served as the breakfast’s premier level sponsor.

“This event is one of the best examples of how we are ‘better together’ and I thank you all for your support in building our communities,” said Michael Durkin, President of United Way of Massachusetts Bay & Merrimack Valley.  “Because of your generosity, last year 290,000 people received emergency assistance with basic needs including help with housing, food and heat.”

United Way also presented the Norman B. Leventhal/Edwin N. Sidman Real Estate and Building Industry Leadership Award, a tribute to extraordinary individuals in the industry who have greatly contributed to our community both professionally and philanthropically.  This year’s award will be presented posthumously to Hank Spaulding, co- founder of Spaulding & Slye (now Jones Lang LaSalle), and to Polly B. Bryson, Partner at Terra Nova Partners and formerly of Spaulding & Slye.

The event included a special tribute to Hank Spaulding, co-founder of Spaulding & Slye, one of Boston’s true visionary developers and founder of The MIT Center for Real Estate. Thirty years ago, Spaulding engineered the company’s first United Way campaign, which still continues today through Jones Lang LaSalle. The firm has raised over $1.1 million in that time. The Spaulding family was present to accept the Leventhal/Sidman Award on his behalf.

Polly B. Bryson, Partner at Terra Nova Partners, worked with Spaulding when she began her career in commercial real estate at Spaulding & Slye in 1981. Throughout her career she has been a leader in the fundraising for a multitude of community service, educational and professional organizations and currently serves on the Board of Directors for United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley.

The program also included a special tribute to Spaulding & Slye co-founder the late George Slye.

Jones Lang LaSalle Executive Managing Director David Slye said: “The United Way has always been an essential part of our culture.  This year’s event held special meaning for us by honoring our former colleagues Hank and Polly with an added acknowledgement of my dad’s contribution to the community. It was a poignant occasion and one that I will cherish. It felt like coming home.”

The keynote address was given by Lawrence S. Bacow, President Emeritus, Tufts University and President in Residence at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, who spoke about higher education as one of the most powerful economic drivers in our region.
