YMCA Names Jones Lang LaSalle to Huntington Ave. Project

BOSTON, March 15, 2012 — The YMCA of Greater Boston has engaged Jones Lang LaSalle for a major renovation of its 316 Huntington Avenue facility. The $25 million project will provide members and the community with a contemporary, fully accessible YMCA. Jones Lang LaSalle was named project manager and has begun work with the YMCA design team, Linea 5, Inc.

Changes to the over 100-year-old building will reflect the Y’s mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The renovation of the 67,225-square-foot facility will be multi-use, flexible, and energy efficient while preserving much of its historic character.

The Y’s multi-million dollar investment will begin with demolishing a portion of the existing rear structure which currently includes a pool and squash courts. This space is antiquated and cannot be converted to meet contemporary pool and gym needs. The new addition will house a new handicap accessible pool, gymnasium, and offices. A new central elevator will connect to all levels and other universal design features will make the building comfortable and convenient for all to use. The basement, first and second floors will undergo a complete interior renovation to include new family locker rooms, childcare, exercise room and café, and a wellness center and studio. The existing lobby’s atrium space will be preserved and its skylight renewed by replacing the roof membrane and panels with new insulating glass. The main entry level will have an updated lobby and reception area, after school program areas, and multi-purpose meeting and activity space. The new facility will be fully accessible and code compliant.

The renovation will be sensitive to historic preservation and environmental concerns. The project team will consult with the Boston Preservation Alliance, the Boston Landmarks Commission, the Massachusetts Historical Commission, Neighborhood Groups and all other city and state agencies having jurisdiction. An interim program is in place to provide members with continuous services during renovation and construction.

“When completed, the Huntington Avenue YMCA facility will continue to be the flagship offering the greatest number of program opportunities to Y members,” said Jones Lang LaSalle Senior Vice President and Project Manager Michael Connelly.
