Harvard University: Developing more than top minds at a world-class university

Services provided: Project and Devlopment Services

JLL has a lengthy and successful history of working with Harvard University and has achieved a critically important base understanding of the its real estate needs, processes and internal staff. Our relationship began in 2003 when Harvard University hired JLL to develop three properties in the Riverside neighborhood of Cambridge.

Our responsibilities as development manager included assisting the University with zoning and permitting efforts, selecting the consultant team, and overseeing the entire development and construction process. Our development team successfully negotiated the needed entitlements for underground parking structures within the City of Cambridge. Recent projects completed for the University include:

  • Riverside Housing Projects: JLL served as the development manager of 10 Akron Street and 5 Copperthwaite Street, both LEED Gold certified residential halls, creating 500 new affiliate beds.

  • Switch House Condominiums: JLL managed the conversion of the historic Blackstone Street Switch House into 33 units of affordable deed-restricted home ownership units.

  • Pleasant Street Condominiums: JLL served as development manager of this 120-unit faculty housing condominium.

In addition to these projects, JLL served as the project manager for ADA and life safety upgrades for Harvard Residential Real Estate’s portfolio of 50 buildings and as project manager for the portfolio’s capital improvements studies. Our involvement in these projects has helped the University to provide both Harvard University and the City of Cambridge with much needed housing.
