HSBC team members uncover major cost- and time-saving improvements with Lean Six Sigma

​JLL had been working with HSBC for more than four years as the bank’s full-service corporate real estate services provider. One component of the partnership was to help HSBC’s internal real estate teams optimize their performance and cut costs.

Specifically, we recognized a need for HSBC to improve leadership communication, and to identify and solve problems in a process-driven manner that could be taught and replicated. We recommended a Lean Six Sigma training to introduce the team to the “Collaborative Management Model,” aimed to help them better manage and govern business alliances, and HSBC agreed.

Our certified Six Sigma Black Belt and Master Black Belt professionals led HSBC’s real estate leadership team through a series of workshops that helped them hone their skills in developing annual strategic objectives, prioritizing initiatives and standardizing performance metrics. Following the formal training, HSBC’s team relied on us to help them put the lessons into action on specific improvement projects with clear charters, timelines and objectives. They were the players; we were their coaches.

Within months of completing the workshops and pilot projects, all participants gained Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification. And in the time since, HSBC has been a multitude of tangible, quantifiable benefits as a result, including:

  • A reduction in headquarter space demand of 30 percent, following a process that accurately matches employee workstyles and workplace requirements
  • Retail project management average cycle time reduction of 32 percent, from 280 days to 190 days on average per project
  • Energy savings of more than $2 million
  • Move management process improvements that save $600,000 per year
