Case Study

The Case Foundation

Services
Tenant Representation

Situation/Process
Steve and Jean Case established the Foundation in 1997. The organization was developed with the mission to invest in people and ideas that address social challenges while engaging entrepreneurship, innovation and technology.

As the Foundation grew so did its real estate requirements. Key to the foundation’s growth was to remain nimble and flexible. They engaged Jones Lang LaSalle to guide them through the real estate process. The existing office space in McLean, Virginia wasn’t ideal, so they sought out other options.

A couple of key priorities were: 1.) stay in close proximity to Steve
Case’s other businesses, at the time in Washington, DC; 2.) Create a more visible profile and active presence in the public/private foundation world, also mostly based in Washington, DC.

Results
The Jones Lang LaSalle team came upon a  boutique property on the CBD fringe area that had recently become available when a tenant filed for bankruptcy. We secured the client one floor (15,000 s.f.) of a 43,000-s.f. master lease.

The space boasts a very flexible open plan layout which creates the balance of private Foundation work space and conference facilities.
In addition, the floor plan was configured so that it made it possible for the Foundation to provide space to “incubate” start-ups that needed office space but also required continued direction and guidance.
