Case Study

Non-profit technology development

New World Ventures and the CEC (Chicago Entrepreneurial Center) fostered an idea for a not-for-profit space that would bring technology designers, engineers and internet start-ups to Chicago to develop their up and coming businesses. They envisioned a community in which programmers and entrepreneurs could work and grow together, while having access to the resources they need to be successful.

In early 2011, The Pritzker Group reached out to Jones Lang LaSalle, Tenant Representation in order to bring their idea to physical space. JLL Project and Development Services were then brought onboard to manage the design and construction and bring 1871 to life.

Solution
Jones Lang LaSalle Project Management was brought in upfront, while the Tenant Representation team was still negotiating the lease with the Chicago Merchandise Mart. This helped to streamline the project delivery the entire design and construction process. From inception to project delivery, was just eight short months. Upfront planning and collaboration helped to deliver a revolutionary space, focused on encouraging creative thinking and sharing of ideas within the clients desired timeline and budget.

Results

  • JLL Project Management produced a dynamic space for young digital start-up companies to learn from each other and have access to valuable services including potential investors, computer code writing classrooms (Code Academy), start-up accelerator (Accelerate Labs), all housed in the same space
  • 1871 opened in May of 2012 with full membership and a waiting list
  • The community serves as a lure to entrepreneurs to make the city of Chicago the home of their emerging ventures
  • Following successful completion of the project, Jones Lang LaSalle was retained to manage the space on an ongoing basis

Value-add
Jones Lang LaSalle’s integrated service platform allowed for a seamless  transition from leasing to construction to fully functional space to day-to-day operations for the Chicago tech community to grow.
