Economic incentive package for BYD Co. Ltd.

BYD Co. Ltd. is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of batteries, solar panels, electronics, and automobiles. Warren Buffett is an investor, and Daimler AG, the world’s second largest maker of luxury cars, recently signed an agreement with BYD to sell vehicles under a jointly owned new brand. With a global sales target of over 800,000 vehicles in 2010 and immediate plans to introduce a new all-electric car to the U.S. market, BYD needed to quickly establish a high-profile U.S. corporate headquarters to showcase its new technologies and establish a significant North American presence. With many states and local governments competing to attract BYD to locate in their region, BYD needed to effectively evaluate and identify a location that would ensure their success in the U.S. market.

Jones Lang LaSalle’s assembled a team comprised of experts in clean technologies, economic incentives, and project management to better understand BYD’s business and real estate needs. This team worked to evaluate building options based on key location conditions, including transportation costs, labor analysis, and tax incentives, on an expedited timeline. Our team worked alongside local government officials to identify the most visible locations and maximize any available economic incentives. Jones Lang LaSalle’s Project Development Services team assessed the physical attributes of the building options and identified the potential construction challenges and investment needed for each location.

In partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies, Jones Lang LaSalle delivered an aggressive real estate transaction and economic incentive package for BYD to select an existing highly-visible building in Los Angeles for it U.S. corporate headquarters. Our Project Development Services team engaged BYD engineers to help assess and manage the integration of BYD products into the building improvements, while minimizing project costs and maximizing BYD's brand to help effectively establish their US presence.
