Multi-faceted sustainability approach produces major savings for HSBC

Since 2001, HSBC has chosen Jones Lang LaSalle to perform a broad platform of real estate services including integrated facility management, project management, transactions, lease administration and strategic consulting. Our account team had informally pursued energy-saving strategies at HSBC facilities for several years, but when the company launched a major global initiative to reduce energy, water and waste, corporate real estate executives asked us to help develop a multi-faceted formal program.

Drawing from best practices learned from sustainability initiatives for clients throughout the world, our team worked with HSBC to develop approaches including:

  • Remote monitoring of HVAC and lighting, expected to save $300,000 a year with a cost payback of three years
  • Six Sigma data center energy improvement that generated over 60 no- or low-cost process improvements that reduced energy consumption by almost 3 percent and saved almost $326,000 during 2009
  • A facility manager awards program which, at a first-year cost of only $6,000, prompted best ideas and practices that reduced 2009 energy consumption by 12 percent at corporate buildings and 5% at retail branches
  • A corporate and branch recycling initiative requiring employees to take out their own trash, which has increased recycling volume by over 6,000 tons yearly to include 85 percent of HSBC’s generated waste

In its first three years HSBC reduced electricity consumption at its 18 major corporate facilities by almost 19 percent, natural gas volume by 11 percent and water use by 26 percent, in addition to the savings from remote monitoring at retail bank branches. This has not only contributed heavily to HSBC’s global sustainability goals, but has reduced U.S. operating costs by $4.5 million during the same period
