Motorola's energy conservation and procurement strategies save more than $10 million

Rising energy costs and corporate pressure motivated Motorola to develop a portfolio-wide strategic program for its 10 million-square-foot global portfolio with focus on operational improvement in energy use. A baseline analysis indicated that an energy program employing procurement strategies and conservation could save more than $4 million across the portfolio while significantly reducing carbon emissions. The company engaged Jones Lang LaSalle’s energy and sustainability experts to lead a collaborative team of our Motorola facility and project managers, space planners and transactions professionals, along with client corporate real estate, human resources and sourcing representatives.  Their charge was to identify solutions that could be implemented with no capital outlay.
Our team identified best practices at high performing properties, and conducted technical audits to identify usage reduction opportunities in lighting and HVAC systems and operational improvements. The strategic approach identified and clarified individual roles and responsibilities, selected qualified suppliers, negotiated sourcing contracts to match property goals and risk tolerance, and implemented a software suite to facilitate tracking for data collection and benchmarking.

Against a baseline of 2006 energy use and spend, energy conservation measures implemented by Motorola accounted for over 50 million kilowatt hours and $5 million in energy cost savings across its global portfolio, a reduction of over 30,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Procurement strategies have resulted in an additional $5 million in avoided energy costs for a combined savings of over $10 million since 2006.
